Just thought I’d toss a couple books out that I am either currently reading or have recently finished. As always, feedback is welcome.
The first one is one I’ve started reading most recently. Trolls & Truth: 14 Realities about Today’s Church that We Don’t Want to See by Jimmy Dorrell, the pastor of Church Under The Bridge in Waco, Texas promises to be anything but a calming, relaxing book. In fact, a chorus that keeps going through my head (for some reason) whenever I look at the cover is a Bob Dylan piece (“When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain?”1). Based on the little I’ve read so far, I give this one a solid thumbs up. The writing style is straightforward, and if the manner in which the tales are told is a bit less poetic than some would prefer, give grace to the author and read what he has to say about the bride of Christ as she appears in the eyes of the least of these.
Another one I strongly recommend is another book that is uncomfortable to read, but for entirely different reasons. Basing his work on the prophetic words of Ezekiel 38-39, Joel C. Rosenberg lays out a possible map of future events in Epicenter: Why the current rumblings in the Middle East will change your futurewe attend in 2007, bought the DVD and book, brought them home and set them down - where they promptly began collecting dust. Earlier this year, we dusted them off after a friend suggested we check out his fiction series. Joel is very much a Republican in his orientation, and this comes through - but interestingly enough, I didn’t find his views getting in the way of the stories. I also strongly recommend this one to folks who are interested in what will happen next in God’s plan.
